Driver Driver is set in mid 70's USA and for a change you get to play the part of the bad guys! The plot is simple, you have been 'hired' as a driver by various underworld gangs, and the job entails driving like the clappers in order to succeed. Missions range from simply picking up the boss and taking him to a 'meeting' to more complex jaunts such as ramming the rival gang leaders car off the road. Although the idea is simple, the games strength is the atmosphere it conveys. As you drive around the cities (starting in Miami and ending in New York) you notice other drivers lawfully going about their business (even indicating when turning!) and as long as you don't do anything naughty the police leave you alone. As soon as you decide to burn some rubber and go over the speed limit though, the fun really begins! The cops chase you like crazy, they have faster cars usually so you have to really drive like a demon to get away from them. As the mission progress and get more difficult the police get reinforcements and it gets really interesting when you have four 'jam sandwiches' pursuing you. Anyone who likes Grand Theft Auto will love this as the chases are great and there is so much attention to detail. For example if you dodge down some of the narrow alleys you will see newspapers and rubbish flying up behind the car caused by the slipstream effect. It is really very good, well recommended but does lack a little depth as the missions are quite repetitive. It is very addictive considering the simplicity of it, I was hooked for four days until I had completed it.
